How to SOAP

  • “All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness…” 2 Timothy 3:16

God is speaking and He wants to walk daily with you!  Journaling will help you to capture and catalog the lessons He teaches in a way that will help you to grow.

  • "I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you."  Psalms 119:11

God wants us to learn His ways and His heart.  We do this by diligently searching His word.  By intently looking at Scripture, we find how God works and a fuller picture of who He is.

  • "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves.  Do what it says."  James 1:22

It is the application of God's Word to our lives that begins to transform us from the inside out.  As we allow the Word to be active in us, we are changed into His image.

  • "The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective."  James 5:16

Prayer is how we move the hand of God in our lives, and in the lives of others.  The journaling of prayers allows us to see how God is working.

SOAP Schedule

  • Monday: Read Genesis 1 and get familiar with the content. SOAP a single verse or write down a question or a thought about something that stands out to you.

Tuesday: Reread Genesis 1 and focus on the first verse specifically. Write down what you think the verse is wanting the reader to get a hold of. Consider how an Isrealite, just being released from slavery in Egypt (a pantheistic/polytheistic culture) might have been impacted by this first verse.

Wednesday: Read Psalms 1 and SOAP or write out what stands out to you the most.

Thursday: Revisit Psalms 1 and SOAP another portion and/or write about the main contrast that the author is focusing on. What can you do to respond to the message of Psalm 1?

Friday: Read John 1:1-3 & 14. Either SOAP a portion of the passage or write about how John plays off of Genesis 1:1. What are the implications of what John is saying about Jesus? How does this affect your relationship with Jesus as God?

  • Monday: Read Genesis and look for the things that are repeated on each day of creation and compare the first three days with the second three days (compare days 1-3 to 4-6). What might we discern about God from Genesis 1?

Tuesday: Read Deuteronomy 4:35-39 (feel free to read the larger context) and think about the children of Israel being freed from slavery in Egypt. What was the important discovery the passage is saying they need to know and how might this discovery be applied to your life?

Wednesday: Read and meditate on the following passages (feel free to read the larger context) and write out (SOAP or Journal) an application and prayer for greater trust in Jesus.

    Colossians 1:16

    Hebrews 1:2

    John 1:1-3

Thursday: Read Psalms 8 and look for any images, words or ideas that might remind you of Genesis 1. What does this chapter tell us/you about God’s wisdom that is available for you?

Friday: Read and meditate on James 1:16-18 and record as many things that James speaks of that remind you of the first three chapters of Genesis, then write down what good gifts you have received from The Father of heavenly lights.

  • Monday: Re-read Genesis 1 and see if you can see any connection or correspondence between days 1,2,& 3 & days 4,5, & 6.

Tuesday: Read Psalms 8 and notice how it relates and connects to Genesis 1.

Wednesday: Read John 20;19-23. What is going on for the disciples that might feel like chaos and what does Jesus do to bring calm?

Thursday: Read and SOAP John 1:1-5.

Friday: Read Matthew 8:23-27 and reflect on what Jesus does to bring calm and how God brings calm to chaos waters. How can we trust God’s power to bring calm into our troubled waters?

  • Monday: Re-read Genesis 1 and reflect on all we have learned. Read it with a narrative eye—notice how often the main character (God) is mentioned, notice the plot conflict in verse 2 and the way the days of creation address that conflict. Then, give space to consider how the description of mankind (remember that Adam’s name means “Mankind”) is a part of the plot conflict being resolved.

Tuesday: Read once again Psalms 8 and specifically look for how the writer speaks of mankind.

Wednesday: Read Psalms 19 and look for Genesis 1. Write as many points of Genesis 1 connections as you can find.

Thursday: Read and SOAP 2 Corinthians 3:15-18 with Genesis 1 in mind.

Friday: Read John 15:1-17 and think through how we are still being called to be God’s representatives.

  • Monday: Read Genesis 1:26-31 and look for, and journal, everything you can find about what is special about Mankind.

Tuesday: Read Genesis 5:3 and 9:6. Notice how the word “image” is used and write some observations about what it reinforces about our Gen. 1:26-27 passage?

Wednesday: Read Colossians 3:8-11 and reflect (SOAP) about what the passages says about how we should treat others and especially in light of vs 10.

Thursday: Read 1 Peter 2:9-12. What kind of impact would a clear Identity, as God’s Royal Representatives, have if we truly grasp our spiritual identity?

Friday: Read Colossians 3:17, & 23-24. SOAP this passage and reflect on the idea that we were created to be responsible as a part of being made in God’s image. How does this cause you to think through your responsibilities?

Thursday: Look up Numbers 3:5-7 & 8:26 & 18:7 & 1 Peter 2:9-11 & 2 Corinthians 5:17-21 and then journal about how the priests were to “work and keep” and how we might also be called to be God’s representatives.
